City-wide Competition to Encourage Engineering as a Profession
HOUSTON (December 8, 2009) – HoustonWorks USA and Schlumberger Limited (NYSE: SLB), today announced the kickoff of Engineering Excellence (E2), a city-wide engineering competition for elementary school, middle school and high school students in conjunction with Engineers Week. The competition will conclude with an engineering fair on February 13, 2010 held on the campus of Rice University showing off the work of participating students.
These future engineers will have to write an essay, create a poster board and 3-D display of their project for judging. Elementary school students have the topic of, “engineering and space,” middle school students have the topic of, “engineering and music,” and high school students have the topic of “engineering and transportation.” The competition will be judged by volunteers from Houston’s Engineering Week Committee. Judges will be looking for creativity, originality and the use of recycled materials.

We are looking forward to seeing some very innovative designs and ideas from this competition.”

First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to individuals from elementary, middle and high schools. First place winners will receive $500 laptop computers and tickets to Space Center Houston and the Museum of Natural Science. Second place winners will receive $200 and tickets to Space Center Houston and the Museum of Natural Science. Third place winners will receive $100 and tickets to Space Center Houston and the Museum of Natural Science. Teachers who assisted all first place winners will also be awarded prizes.
